Health Tips for Children

In today’s times, health problems like diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure are not restricted to adults, but have become a common phenomenon among children too. The main culprit for this can be attributed to their inclination towards fast food and lack of activity. Kids love to gorge on fast foods like burgers, pizzas, etc., and with the introduction of video games and a host of interesting programs on television, they are more than happy to watch television instead of playing outdoor games.

Due to this lack of activity and no control on the food they eat, many children suffer from the problem of obesity at a very young age, which further leads to other serious diseases or illnesses. Hence, it becomes the responsibility of the parents to teach children important ways to remain healthy.

Healthy Tips for Your Children

The three most important factors that are necessary for the kids to remain healthy include:

  • a healthy diet
  • regular exercise
  • proper rest

Habits we learn during our childhood stay with us throughout our life; it is thus necessary that parents teach these three factors to children as soon as possible. However, you do not need to force them to learn these habits; set an example for them by following these things yourself. Let us look at each factor in detail.

Nutrition for a Healthy Diet
At a very young age itself, teach the kids to eat all types of food, like fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, dairy products, etc. Their meals should be divided into five or six small meals throughout the day, rather than just three meals. Cultivate the habit of eating breakfast as it is said to be the most important meal of the day. Eating a healthy and nutritious breakfast helps their body to develop energy for the physical as well mental activities of the day.

Parents should also see to it that children have a healthy lunch while they are at school. Though there are many schools which provide lunch, its nutritious value is a topic of controversy. Hence, it will be best to pack them foods that are high in vitamins and minerals. Other than lunch, also make sure that you provide them with a healthy after school snack, as this is a time where they are likely to indulge in junk food. Dried and fresh fruits, yogurt, cereal bars, etc., are good choices for a healthy snack. Next comes the dinner, or evening meal, which should be converted to time spent with the family. Eating together at least once in a day will help the parents interact with their children and also to keep control on their eating habits. Talking to them about the nutritional facts of healthy foods is a good way of instilling healthy food habits in children. Though too much of junk food does harm a child’s body, there is no need to restrict it completely.

Fitness and Exercise
Indulging in daily outdoor games with friends is more than enough physical exercise for children. Parents should see to it that their kids do not spend their entire time in front of the television or playing video games. They should encourage them to take part in sports and other physical activities like dancing, etc., so that their body gets the required exercise. Arranging games for them and their friends regularly at home, in which they have to run around and play, is a good idea. On weekends, take them out walking, jogging, swimming, or cycling, at least for an hour, and you’ll be preventing childhood obesity.

Health and Proper Rest
Rest and sleep are two important factors to keep children healthy. Children require 9-13 hours of sleep, depending on their age group. Lack of sleep in children can cause problems like lack of attention at school, feeling sleepy during the day, poor academic performance, etc. Hence, parents must ensure that their children receive sufficient sleep.

Other than these tips, it is important to teach kids proper hygiene rules like regular washing of hands, brushing their teeth, etc., so that they are not affected by infections. Explain the importance of eating the right food and exercising to your kids. Remember, by doing this you are not only providing them a hale and hearty childhood, but also ensuring

a healthy future.

Healthy Eating Tips to Follow

Today’s youngsters, especially teenagers are ignorant about long-term benefits of a healthy diet. Fast foods are very popular among teenagers and often a routine diet for them. But these ‘junk’ foods will affect overall health and aggravate nutrient deficiency. Making healthy food choices is the key to have a well-built physique and this habit of having a nutritious diet needs to be inculcated in teenagers for better health.
Diets for Teenagers
Following are the foods that cover the nutritional requirements of a teen body.
High Fiber Foods
Diet for teenagers must include foods high in fiber. These foods have a high nutrition value and are low in fats. Most importantly, high fiber diet promotes overall health as it is loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Wondering which foods come under the list of foods high in fiber? Good diet includes foods such as vegetables (Brussels sprouts, carrot, boiled broccoli), fruits (raisins, bananas and apple) and whole wheat bread. Moreover vegetables like tomatoes are rich in antioxidants and provide anti-aging effects.
Dairy Products
Teenagers without fail should drink at least a glass of milk everyday. In fact, milk is regarded as a complete food and an elixir for good health. So as a parent you should ensure that your child takes a glass of milk everyday in the morning and evening. Milk is rich in nutrients like vitamins, proteins and minerals. Most importantly, it is high in calcium and as we all know adequate intake of calcium is crucial to build strong bones. Teenagers taking a glass of milk daily will definitely have good bones that will remain healthy for years to come. For optimal health of teeth and bones, having milk in sufficient amounts is necessary. Milk is rich in vitamin A and vitamin B12 that are essential to maintain normal eyesight. Diet for teenagers is incomplete without including other dairy products.
High Protein Foods
Intake of proteins is recommended for proper muscle growth. Our muscles are primarily made up of proteins. Thus, protein rich foods are a tool for proper growth and maintenance of muscles. Well cooked fish, lean meat (skinless chicken) as well as boiled eggs are a great way to fulfill the protein requirements of our body. Besides being high in proteins, they are also low in unhealthy fats and hence are a key component of weight loss diets for teenagers.
Say No To Fast Foods
Teenagers love fast foods but as parents you need to make them aware of the fact that consumption of these ‘junk’ foods will not provide any nutrition to the body. Fast foods have a high calorie content, so eating them on a regular basis, can lead to excess weight gain. Now being overweight predisposes a person to obesity. Thus, one can say that obesity and fast food are related. Teenagers who are obese are indirectly put on the path that leads to various health problems. Eating a burger or fried chips, once in a while is OK but surely cannot be a part of diet for teenagers.
Tips for Healthy Eating
Teen years is a very important period of life and is typically marked by rapid physical growth. Giving healthy food a miss during this period can cause a lifetime of regret. To keep away health from declining and to ensure a good start to adulthood, parents need to inculcate the following eating habits among their children.

  • See to it that your child does not leave the home without having a healthy breakfast. This is because breakfast is the most important meal and should be nutritious enough to keep your child active and energetic throughout the day.
  • It is observed that teenagers have developed a fetish for fizzy drinks. Although adequate fluid intake is essential, it should not come from carbonated drinks. Fresh vegetable or fruit juices or simply water are some of the options to keep the body well hydrated.
  • Having meals in haste is one habit often noticed among teenagers. Instead of gobbling, giving utmost priority to chewing the food properly is very important and plays a critical role in digestion.
  • The habit of chatting or watching the idiot box (TV) during meals is not a proper way of eating food. This way, one unknowingly tends to eat in excess, which eventually leads to weight gain. Therefore, one should wholly focus on the act of eating and the enjoy the taste of every morsel food to the fullest.
  • Teens often feel like having a snack in between meals. As a parent, it is your responsibility that they do not indulge in processed foods but go for healthy snacks like almonds, protein shakes and slices of fresh apples and pear.
Although, these foods form an integral part of healthy diet, they should be eaten in moderation. Overeating and lack of physical activity are the main factors that has led to widespread occurrence of obesity among teenagers. So, whether you have a teenage daughter or a boy, make sure that he/she follows an exercise regime and good eating habits.

Tips to Keep Your Child Healthy

It’s a common misconception that growing kids can eat anything and everything they want, and will still stay healthy because they’re naturally active. Genetic factors are a consideration, but many children are imitating bad habits they see in their parents. This includes a poor diet, with a reliance on fast foods or processed foods, and not exercising. Until a few years back, parents found it hard to believe that children need a diet and fitness plan. They thought it was something only the grown-ups needed―grown-ups that weren’t in shape. After all the awareness child obesity statistics created, parents have now understood the importance of a healthy lifestyle for their kids.

The average child today spends around 24 hours a week watching television. The increased popularity of computer and video games means kids may spend even less time engaging in physical activities. Just like overweight adults, overweight children are at a greater risk of illness and disease.

What You Can Do

☛ Don’t criticize or blame your child of being overweight. Talk with him about your concerns regarding his weight and health. Teach him to accept and feel good about himself.

☛ Do a reality check and see if your lifestyle needs any changes. Be a role model by paying attention to your own diet, fitness regime, and lifestyle; not being obsessed with it at the same time. Show him that you are confident about your body.

☛ Get moving and make exercise a family affair. There are plenty of activities that you can enjoy together. Plan family outings that include physical activities, such as biking, trekking, or swimming.

☛ Practice healthy eating. Families today are busier than ever, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on nutrition. Many cookbooks feature fast, healthy recipes. Provide nutritious snacks and teach your child to make healthy food choices on his own.

☛ Just a few habit changes in your family can make a big difference. Discourage him from eating in front of the TV or the computer. More often than not, kids get so lost in front of their T.V. sets (like we all do, from time to time), that they tend to eat in excess. Eat together as a family as much as possible, encourage him to eat slowly, and learn to enjoy good food. Invite your child to participate in food choice and preparation.

☛ For more information on healthy eating and exercise, talk to a registered dietician or a professional trainer, particularly one who has experience of dealing with children. If you feel that your child’s weight might cause serious health problems, consult a physician/pediatrician immediately.

It’s never too early to start a healthy diet and fitness regime for your child, and never too late for you to make the switch to a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy and eat right!

Breastfeeding Tips and Tricks

Breastfeeding refers to feeding a baby with breast milk by opting skin-to-skin contact position. The health benefits are incomparable to the other options of feeding the baby. Breast milk contains the right proportion of nutrients that are essential for the healthy growth and development of the baby. It is the healthiest form of milk for a baby. Furthermore, there is no other substitute or baby food that can replace breast milk, in terms of its nutritional value.

Apart from the baby, breastfeeding also provides certain benefits for the mother. As per the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), a mother should continue exclusive feeding of breast milk for the first six months after childbirth. Nevertheless, certain problems may occur during the period of nursing the baby. However, following certain tips and tricks, would make it easier and comfortable for both the mother and the baby.

Tips and Tricks

This is a comfortable activity, but there are several aspects that a new mother needs to know about it. As a new mother, one might be unaware of the convenient holding position of the baby while feeding, which in turn could irritate the newborn as well. The mother should be relaxed, and feel confident about her choice. Here are some important tips for new mothers.

Start Early
The earlier one starts feeding the baby, the sooner one would learn the right method. Hence, consider holding and feeding the baby in the delivery room as soon as possible. The guidance of a lactation consultant can be taken in terms of nursing and breast care. The feeding of the newborn with breast milk, should begin within the first hour after childbirth.

Feed the Colostrum
Colostrum, a sticky and yellowish milk, which is secreted during or towards the end of pregnancy is rich in antibodies and immunoglobulins. Feeding colostrum to the newborn helps in promoting the immune system and also, in excreting the first stool (meconium) after birth. It is often considered as giving the first vaccination of life.

Breastfeeding Position
Being in the motherhood stage, it is necessary to learn the right feeding position. Furthermore, the position should be comfortable. One should always support the back while sitting or lying down to feed the baby. Also, one needs to support the baby with the hand while feeding, rather than bending down or lowering the breast. As the baby is being fed, a tingling sensation would be felt that would mark the release of breast milk. Make sure to breastfeed from both breasts at each feeding.

Dealing with Breast Soreness
Tenderness and/or soreness of the breasts is commonly manifested during the first week of feeding. This condition would subside slowly, as the milk starts flowing from the breasts. However, in case of pain, one should consult a lactation consultant.

Breast Pumps
One of the factors that could pose a hindrance is managing office work, and the baby at the same time. The tips for working moms include the use of breast pumps that are available in baby care centers. Depending upon the frequency of pumping, one could opt for either the manual-operated or electric-operated breast pumps. One can seek the advice of a lactation consultant in order to buy the best product suiting one’s lifestyle.

Six Months and Longer
As already mentioned, exclusive nursing for six months is a must for the baby’s health. After the baby turns six months old, continue feeding with breast milk, along with supplemental diets like baby formula and semi-solid foods. Overall, it should be done till the child becomes 1½ – 2 years old.

An experienced mother would be able to help with tips and tricks for successful nursing of the baby. With the growing popularity of feeding breast milk, four out of every five moms breastfeed their baby in the United States. As more mothers become aware about the benefits, it is becoming a conventional trend of motherhood. Eventually, the forthcoming generation will be healthy and strong.

Helpful Tips on Raising Quails Effectively

Quails are small-sized terrestrial birds that originated from thePhasianidae family. These medium-sized birds comprise numerous species of which some of them are bred and raised on a large-scale. Depending on the quail species, they differ in their appearance, which gives the breeder a variety to choose from. These little plump birds have become popular in cookery as their eggs have good amount of nutrition value. In early times these birds were mostly used for hunting purposes and now they are mainly used for food. Raising and hatching quail eggs is not an easy task and must be done with complete dedication. Well raised quails can prove profitable. However, improper care can lead to many problems. Before considering the idea of bringing up quails, it is important to think of the space, cost and materials that are required to bring up these plump birds. In case you are planning to breed quails then you must make yourself aware about the bird’s health issues, growth rate and the size of the flock. So, read through the tips on how to raise these birds, to start your own mini quail farming.

Bringing Up Quails

Selecting the Right Flock
Quails must be well selected before starting the breeding process. The birds must be of the similar size and must weigh normal. A 60 day old quail will weigh around 120 g while a 30-35 old will weigh about 100 g. Therefore, before bringing in the quails choose the appropriate flock so that breeding becomes a risk free process. Before purchasing the flock go through the medical or family record to understand the growth rate and also to predict any future health issues. If you are a beginner then purchase less quails but the ratio of females to males should be more. Males tend to easily breed with females and within 6 weeks a female quail is ready to lay eggs. These eggs can be consumed after 4-5 weeks.

Housing for Quails
Also consider the cost of the cage that you will need for the quails. These are medium-sized but plump birds, so, they require sufficient space to move around. You can either purchase a cage, which has a strong base or build it with plywood, mesh wire and lumber. Construct a big cage which would provide the birds with sufficient space and comfort as they grow. In case the flock is big, build or purchase layered cages so that you can accommodate the birds well.

Setting up Brooders
Brooders are boxes which has an inbuilt bulb and provides shelter to the newborn chicks. Brooder boxes keep the chicks warm until they develop feathers. Ventilation of air is important to prevent the brooder from getting too warm. After 10 days, the chicks can be brought out and kept under room temperature. Spread layers of newspapers on the cage flooring so that it can absorb the droppings of the bird. Newspapers can be easily rolled up and disposed off, which makes cleaning easy.

Quail Diet
To assure healthy quails, it is essential to feed them a high protein diet. Feed a proper balanced diet to your birds to assure their healthy life. Small insects and seeds are among the bird’s favorite foods. However, if you are raising these birds for food purposes then wheat seed and greens are healthy food constituents for quails.

These tips on how to raise quails are effective and will make their care easy for you. However, it is preferred to build the cage slightly above the ground so that the birds stay unharmed from predators. Also, water and food must be clean and clear of dirt and must be fresh to consume. The occupation of bringing up quails for any purpose, requires dedication and knowledge to gain maximum benefits.

Yoga Mudras for Good Health

When one talks about yoga, one is talking about three aspects, namely; physical, mental and spiritual. In yoga, there are asanas and mudras, which when, loosely translated mean exercises and hand gestures, respectively. As there are different asanas for maintaining health and vitality, there are certain mudras, which help in this endeavor as well.

When one is practicing mudras, for a substantial amount of time, the benefits that the mudras offer are visible. The mudras help in generating, redirecting and recharging the energies of the force, which governs the body. It is with the mudras, that one is able to establish a link between the physical, pranic and mental body. They help in awakening the different pranas, chakras and kundalini located in the body.

Mudras in Yoga and their Benefits
Although mudras are a part of yoga, they can be practiced independently without the asanas. The beauty of this science is that they can be done when one is sitting, standing or sleeping in bed; however, they are performed either in vajrasana, padmasana or sukhasana. There is no specific time that needs to be followed for most of the mudras; however, the results are best, when they are practiced on an empty stomach, early in the morning.

How to Gain Weight the Healthy Way

Weight loss is on everyone’s mind these days. But, there are a few lucky people out there who fail to put on weight, even after having a high-calorie diet. Now, it is essential to note that difference between being skinny and being undernourished. There are several causes for being naturally skinny, like having a faster metabolism, being physically active, etc. On the other hand, sometimes a person loses weight due to some illness or on undergoing any surgical procedure. Whatever the reason, if you are trying to gain weight, it is essential to do it in a healthy way.

Tips to Gain Weight Healthily

Most of us think eating large amounts of food, specially, fatty junk food is the only way to increase your weight. This is untrue! Some people do not gain weight even after having regular and adequate meals. However, if you are among those few people and are thinking of gaining weight, then there are some tips that you need to consider.

Firstly, in order to gain weight, you need to consume foods that have higher calories. But, the sources of these calories should be healthy.

You should not rely on fatty and greasy foods as they can result in increasing the cholesterol levels of the body, which are unhealthy. Therefore, gorging on a pizza or cheeseburger every day is a total no-no.

Rather, try including good sources of fats like nuts, olives, olive oil, fatty fish like salmon, cream-based soups, etc. in your diet.

Foods in your daily diet should have proper amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins. You should have foods that have high amounts of carbohydrates and proteins; and low amounts of fats.

Beverages, soft drinks, contain empty calories and are not good for health. Skip sodas and chilled drinks and include fruits juices and vegetable soups in your diet in order to gain weight.

You should avoid having beverages or fruit 1 hour before meals as they tend to suppress appetite.

Lastly, in order to gain weight, you should avoid starvation and eat often (5-6 small and healthy meals per day).

Foods for Weight Gain
With these tips, you must also be looking for foods to be included in the weight gain diet. The following is a list of foods that you can consume to gain weight the healthy way.

Fruits and Vegetables
Carbohydrate content in fruits and vegetables provide the necessary energy and help in weight gain. Include broccoli, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, onion, peas, beans; and fruits like banana, pears, plums, almonds, peanuts, chestnuts, apricots, avocado, etc. in your diet. You can have fruit juices, dried fruits, vegetable salads with dressing made with cream or cheese, etc. as they contain a high amount of calories.

Dairy Products
All dairy products are rich sources of proteins and also contain calories. But, they also contain high amounts of fats. Fortunately there are fat-free versions available which are safer to consume. You can have a cup of milk or a cup of yogurt regularly to get all the essential calories. On the other hand, you can add low-fat butter, peanut butter, almond butter, soy cheese, feta cheese, etc. to your sandwiches and salads to gain weight quickly.

Meat and Poultry
As mentioned above, certain fatty fish contain good fats and hence, are safe to consume. You can eat fatty fish like salmon, herring, mackerel, lake trout and sardines which contain the necessary calories. Similarly, egg dishes, lean meats, grilled or boiled chicken are also healthy food options.

Starch
Whole wheat flour contains carbohydrates and right amount of calories. You can eat products made from whole wheat flour, rice, pasta, corn, peas, potatoes, etc., to gain weight in a healthy manner. You can even have dried fruits and nuts, flax seeds, all kinds of beans like soy beans, kidney beans, etc. for the same.

Sweets
Desserts made from powdered milk or condensed milk are safe to eat. Secondly, you can have dark chocolate as it contains antioxidants. For snacking, you can have nuts, granola with nuts, a bowl of berries with yogurt; or baked and fat-free cookies; pretzels, smoothies, fruit salad, etc.

Following these tips can definitely help in a healthy weight gain. If you wish to include nutritional supplements in your diet, make sure you consult the doctor before taking the same. Lastly, note that this write-up is meant for informational purposes. Any major changes in the diet should be made only on consulting the doctor. Take care!

Mental Health

Mental illness sucks. That’s the only way to truly describe it and capture my honest feelings on it at the same time. It affects everything you do, think, and feel. It encroaches on your life and before you know it, you’re unable to function like the rest of the society.

This is what millions of Americans are dealing with daily. They suffer in silence as the rest of the country continues on in ignorance.

In this series, I hope to help eliminate a small bit of stigma by informing the public audience about mental illnesses from both a personal and an informational standpoint. As someone diagnosed with depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and borderline personality disorder, I have plenty of personal experience to go on. Mental illness affects both one’s mental and physical health. In the first chapter of this series, I’d like to give a few tips for keeping yourself mentally healthy. You’ll notice many of these tips go hand-in-hand with proper physical health as well. This is an important correlation to realize: that one’s physical and mental health are intrinsically connected.

Eating Right

Proper diet is an essential part of being both physically and emotionally healthy. You may notice that when you eat badly, you feel the same. Keeping your diet filled with vegetables, whole grains, and protein will keep your body and mind happy.

Exercise

Physical activity releases endorphins. Endorphins are brain chemicals that make us happy. You + Exercise = Endorphins = Feeling good. It’s a rather simple equation.

Setting Aside “Me Time”

Even the busiest people must have fifteen minutes in a twenty-four hour day to spend on themselves. It’s the most important time of the day. You can do whatever it is that makes you happy. Read a book, meditate, walk the dog, take a hot bath, whatever it is as long as its just for you.

Positive Affirmations

At first I thought this was a bunch of BS too, but it honestly works. By repeating over and over a phrase like “I will stop procrastinating today.” (a personal favorite) or “I am a strong person.” you are not only meditating on that phrase but the phrase is ingrained in your subconscious. Some call it the Law of Attraction, but I just call it common sense now.

Sleep!
Getting at least eight hours sleep is a necessity for good mental health. If you are exhausted, it’s not very conducive to a good mood. Sleeping too much, doesn’t help either. A major sign of depression is sleeping more than usual. Personally I slept twelve to fourteen hours a day when I was depressed. Keep a balance and try to sleep at the same time every night.

There are so many more helpful tips for keeping yourself mentally healthy that perhaps I will add in some other part of this series. In the meantime, try to incorporate these elements into your life so you can keep yourself and your brain healthy.
